If you’ve lived in Murray for any amount of time, you know we’re a community that values two things: a good deal and a neighbor you can trust. Whether you’re a student at MSU needing to stash your dorm gear for the summer or a long-time resident finally clearing out the "catch-all" room, finding a storage unit is a rite of passage here. But if you start calling around, you’ll notice prices can be all over the place. From my own experience helping friends move and renting units myself over the years, here’s the "local's inside track" on what to expect for storage prices in our neck of the woods. Average Price Breakdown in Murray: The Small Stash (5x10): Typically, you’re looking at $45 to $60 a month. These are perfect for about a room's worth of furniture or a mountain of MSU textbooks. The Apartment Sized (10x10): These usually run between $65 and $85. If you’re between apartments, this is usually the go-to size. The Whole House (10x20 or larger): For the big units, expect to pay anywhere from $95 to $150+. The Climate Control Premium: If you want to protect things from our famous West Kentucky humidity, expect to add about 40-60% to those base prices. Why the "Cheapest" Isn't Always the Best Deal: I’ve made the mistake of renting the absolute cheapest unit out in the county before. By the time I factored in the gas to get there and the fact that the "security" was just a rusty chain-link fence, I realized I wasn't actually saving money. In Murray, you really want a place that's close enough to town that it doesn't feel like a day trip just to grab your Christmas decorations. Look for "hidden" value. A place that offers online autopay and instant phone rentals saves you a trip to an office, which, let's be honest, is worth a few extra bucks a month. The "Quality over Clutter" Philosophy: There’s a sweet spot in the Murray market. You want a facility that feels professional—clean aisles, bright lights, and cameras that actually work—but you don't want to pay big-city corporate prices. I’ve found that the locally owned spots tend to take way better care of their properties. They’re our neighbors, after all. There’s one family-run operation in town, Magnolia Storage, that seems to have hit that nail on the head. They aren't the "bargain basement" price, but for the level of security and the ease of their website, it’s arguably the best value for your dollar in Calloway County. Local Tips for Saving Money: Ask about Autopay: Some places give you peace of mind (and avoid late fees) just by setting up a card. Size Matters: Don't pay for a 10x20 if you can stack your boxes well in a 10x10. Trust the Locals: Talk to people who have lived here a while. We know which areas are good and which ones to stay away from. Over 600 of our neighbors use Magnolia Storage , which usually tells you all you need to know. What size storage unit do I need? When you're storing valuable belongings, the small difference in monthly rent between a standard drive-up unit and a climate-controlled unit can mean the difference between preservation and deterioration. While drive-up units are great for tools and lawn equipment, they simply cannot protect sensitive items from the powerful forces of the Murray, KY climate. Want to compare all three of our climate-controlled locations? See our climate-controlled storage in Murray, KY page. Here is why climate control is non-negotiable for your most cherished possessions: The Drive-Up VulnerabilityDrive-up units act just like uninsulated garages. They are exposed to the full range of outside weather conditions, which creates a damaging environment for valuables: Extreme Temperature Swings: The metal walls absorb summer heat, turning the unit into an oven (well over 100°F), which can melt plastics, crack wood, and damage sensitive electronics. Uncontrolled Humidity: High moisture in the air is the biggest threat. It causes paper to yellow, leather to crack and peel, and metals to rust or corrode. Risk of Pests: Because these units are closer to the ground and the outside world, they can be more susceptible to pests that target textiles and paper. Storage size: What size storage unit do i need? Climate Control: The Shield Your Valuables Need Climate-controlled units are sealed, indoor units that regulate both temperature and humidity, providing a consistent, stable environment year-round. Protects Electronics & Media: High heat and moisture can short-circuit or corrode internal components in TVs, computers, and gaming consoles. Stable temperature and humidity prevent this, preserving their functionality. Preserves Furniture and Antiques: Wood and leather are especially vulnerable. Climate control prevents the warping, cracking, and splitting that extreme temperature changes can cause, maintaining the integrity and value of heirloom pieces. Safeguards Irreplaceable Paper & Art: Important documents, family photographs, vinyl records, and artwork are all prone to yellowing, fading, or mold in humid conditions. Climate control keeps them dry, legible, and intact. Maintains Collectible Value: For items like comic books, coins, stamps, or musical instruments, a stable environment is crucial to preventing rust, fading, or warping that would significantly decrease their market value.
