Murray State Winter Break Storage: Where to Keep Your Things Until January
The fall semester at Murray State goes fast, and then December shows up. Residence halls close for winter break, apartment leases don't always line up, and a car only holds so much. If you're a student, or the parent helping one move out, a storage unit can keep your things safe until January without hauling everything home and back.
We're locally owned and operated, and two of our Murray locations are close to campus. Here's how they compare for a winter break move-out.

1. Why December move-outs get tight
Picture the last Friday before break. Finals are finally done, a sophomore is standing in a dorm room with a mini-fridge, a futon cushion, two laundry baskets of clothes, and a guitar, and a parent is circling the parking lot in a car that is already half full. Nothing about that scene is unusual in Murray in December. Everyone is clearing out at the same time, and the last thing you want is to be stuck without a plan.
Booking ahead takes the pressure off. You can rent online through our website in under 3 minutes, so it's something you can handle between exams, not something that eats a whole afternoon.
2. Pick the location that fits your stuff
If you're storing furniture, a mini-fridge, bins, or a bike, the drive-up units at Center Drive are easy to load right from your trunk or a borrowed truck. It's close to campus, so the trip is short.
If you're storing electronics, books, bedding, or that guitar, take a look at Airport Rd. Kentucky humidity is hard on paper, fabric, and anything with a circuit board, and our climate-controlled units there are built for exactly that kind of thing.
3. Pick the right size
Most students don't need a big unit. A small unit can hold a dorm room's worth of boxes, a mini-fridge, and a few bins. Sharing with a roommate and splitting a larger unit is common too. Not sure what will fit? Our size guide shows what goes in each size, so you don't have to guess.
4. A simple packing plan
A little prep goes a long way:
Pack in sturdy bins or boxes of similar size so they stack well. Label every one. Wash and fully dry bedding and clothes before they go in. Empty and defrost any fridge and leave the door cracked open. Keep a path down the middle of the unit so you can reach things in January. Put what you'll need first near the front.
5. Coming back in January
Now picture that same sophomore on the first weekend of spring semester. The unit is right where they left it, the boxes are labeled, and the futon cushion is back in the dorm by lunch. That's the whole idea: a little planning in December, and January is easy.
